You know, the financial institutions are not going to put up with regulation from any government, let alone the current US one.

If you look at Obama's top contributors to his election campaign, you see Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and JP Morgan Chase. The members of these institutions that contributed obviously are going to want a return on their investment and I don't think regulation is in their plans. If Obama is looking to be reelected, he's going to need money from these companies again and so he's not going to annoy them.

You know, I thought about it a bit more after I posted and realised that that was a pretty simplistic view, although it may explain the underlying increase. And I suppose it'll only get worse with people retiring at a later age, or being forced to by a poor economic climate. Actually, that being the case, would you expect to see the unemployment rate top out at the 1980s level? Cos looking at the graph it seems to be turning and you usually get a steep 2% decrease pretty soon after a recession.

And yes, I really should write more often. I have been keeping track of your blog though, it's one of my homepages.

Yup, part of the 1970s unemployment was due to increased labor market participation of women and the entrance of baby boomers. Technology can cut both ways, in the 1990s it actually made workers more productive (microcomputers) and so gave workers an advantage. Robotics or globalization that sends jobs elsewhere can do the opposite. Demographics are a huge part of the underlying structural rate!

(good to see you!!!! write your american mom more often!!!)

Not being an economist, I dunno whether I'm qualified to make any comments, but isn't the upward trend due to population growth and automation? You have more people who need jobs, but you need less people to do those jobs because of robotics, computers, etc. Where I work we had redundancies about 5 months ago and got rid of some a good portion of the production staff, but seem to still get out the same amount of product.
Education seems to be a good career choice in a recession though. ;)

I didn't get a chance to read this when you first posted it at TC, Dak - I fell last week and have been pretty much "laid up" - so I'm just getting back to "normality" whatever that may be.

I did not see this post aimed at any particular gender - or even group except those "not nice" folks.

This post is great - it gets to the heart of some of the craziness that we've seen evolve in the last few months.
